Carbon that gives nature more room to recover.

Habitat Positive: Sanctuary One

[ OVERVIEW ]

A carbon-led restoration program designed to deliver measurable environmental outcomes at scale, while creating wider conservation, community and brand value.

Where Rewilding Begins

Habitat Positive is Taronga Conservation Society Australia's flagship landscape restoration and rewilding initiative. The first site, Sanctuary One, covers 3,050 hectares on the North West Slopes of NSW and is one of Australia's largest Box-gum Woodland rewilding sites.

Built for Threatened Species

Up to one million native seedlings are planned to rebuild wildlife corridors and restore critically endangered Box-Gum Woodlands, with the site intended to support up to 36 threatened species including koalas.

A Pilot Project

Sanctuary One is a pilot site which marks the beginning of scalable restoration, with Taronga’s ambition being to restore two million hectares by 2050 with industry partners.

Science First, Always

The project is positioned to deliver local, high-integrity ACCUs to the private sector. But it goes further: seed sourcing was informed by genetic analysis undertaken with the Royal Botanic Gardens' Research Centre for Ecosystem Resilience to maximise genetic diversity and improve long-term climate resilience; climate and conservation science modelling informed site selection; and multi-decade protection, monitoring and active management are in place, rather than plant-and-leave approach.

A Proven Track Record

Numbers that matter: Taronga has 23 threatened species recovery programs, prevented seven species from going extinct, and has released over 64,000 animals to the wild.

This project lines up well with our "assets, not just credits" framing - the carbon is a co-benefit of ecosystem restoration rather than the main game, and the biodiversity outcome is specific and measurable (with named ecosystem and named species counts). The project offers corporate buyers more than a carbon credit transaction, providing an opportunity to support long-term restoration of a nationally significant landscape while contributing to ongoing stewardship and conservation outcomes.

[ CO2 AUSTRALIA'S ROLE ]

We were engaged by Taronga Conservation Society Australia to help deliver the Habitat Positive Sanctuary One project, supporting registration, establishment, maintenance and ACCU creation as part of a large-scale biodiversity and carbon restoration initiative.
